Reese's Peanut Butter Cups (Only Better)

***Edit (2/8/13) Are you here from Pinterest looking for a sugar-free Reese's cup recipe? Click here.***

This recipe has been in our family for years and years but I never make it because of it's rather steep caloric count. Well this Christmas when we were throwing calories "to the wind" I kept craving this decadent treat, but of course my recipe was here at home while I was out in Utah for a month. So guess what was the first treat that I made when I got home, despite my 2 week hiatus from sugar? Yep Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, Only Better. The "Only Better" part is because ya know when you are endulging in a real Reese's Peanut Butter Cup and you wish so badly that there was more of the peanut butter filling? Well look no more, here is your recipe. The filling is nice and think and tastes just like a peanut butter cup. If you are one of those people that actually like MORE chocolate and less peanut butter, then just add 1 1/2 or 2 bags of chocolate chips!

Reese's Peanut Butter Cups (Only Better)

Reese's Peanut Butter Cups (Only Better)

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups graham cracker crumbs (I buy the store bought crushed but you can always crush your own graham crackers)
  • 3 1/4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups creamy peanut butter
  • 1 cup salted butter, melted
  • 1 bag (12 oz) semi sweet chocolate chips
  • 2 tablespoons butter*

Instructions

  1. Combine the graham cracker crumbs and the powdered sugar in a large bowl.
  2. Add the peanut butter and melted butter and mix well.
  3. Pour the mixture into a 9x13 pan and freeze for 20 minutes or until firm.
  4. While the peanut butter mixture is cooling, you can microwave or use a double boiler to melt your chocolate chips and 1-2 tablespoons of butter. I personally just throw the chips and butter in a microwaveable glass bowl and microwave 30 seconds on high, stir and repeat until they are melted. Works perfectly every time.
  5. Pour the chocolate over the peanut butter mixture and spread evenly. Put the bars in the fridge and when the chocolate is set take out and cut yourself a little piece, and then get ready to take a short jaunt to heaven!!
Yield: 1 9x13 pan
Prep Time:15 minutes
Cook time: 30 minutes (cooling time)

*Update (12/8/12) If you are having trouble with the chocolate layer on top being stiff or cracking when the bars are cut, you can add 1/3-1/2 cup warmed creamy peanut butter to the melted chocolate instead of the butter. This uses more peanut butter, but the end result is smoother.

  1. Yum! I eating so many of these bars at your house one time that I'm a little embarrassed thinking about it. They are delicious!

  2. I don't even want to say how much of this I ate today. The peanut butter mixture almost didn't make it into the freezer...I wanted to take a spoon and just eat it out of the bowl....but it was also worth the patience, because of course everything is better when you add some chocolate! Thanks Nicole. :-)

  3. I love Reese's peanut butter cups ever since I was a little girl...A homemade version of it will be a real treat. Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  4. Did you just cut them with a cookie cutter to the the circle shape?

    ReplyDelete
  5. These look like trouble! What brand of peanut butter did you use?

    ReplyDelete
  6. I've used both Jif and a natural peanut butter and both work really well. A little too well. . . :)

    ReplyDelete
  7. I did. You can cut them in squares, too, or any shape you want, really.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Do you spray or use foil so the don't stick to the pan?

    ReplyDelete
  9. No, there is enough oil in the peanut butter that I've never had a problem with it sticking.

    ReplyDelete
  10. cant wait to try these

    ReplyDelete
  11. Great tasting and easy to make:)

    ReplyDelete
  12. Reese's are my favorite and I remember making these years ago and using baking cups so they looked like a real Reese's. You could even use mini sized cups with this recipe. It was delicious.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I make these too and roll them into balls and pat them down in small paper cups and then pour the chocolate over them....They ar sooo good...:)

    ReplyDelete
  14. I want to try these.

    ReplyDelete
  15. What kind of a cracker is a Graham cracker? We don't get those in South Africa. We get a Cream cracker, which I think may be the equivalent, sort of plain, dry?? Thanx:) Would love to make these......

    ReplyDelete
  16. Graham crackers are slightly sweet, dry cookies. Something similar might be a plain digestive biscuit, if you can find those where you are. A graham cracker is a little bit drier and crumbles more easily, I think, but digestive biscuits might be the closest thing you can get.

  17. My Mom always used rice crispies in her home made pb cups...very yummy!

    ReplyDelete
  18. I just made them and I cannot wait for my daughter to get home from school and try them!!  Thank you for sharing your awesome receipe!!

    ReplyDelete
  19. I'm so glad you liked them! Hope your daughter enjoys them, too.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Just made a batch...yummy!

    ReplyDelete
  21. no a cream cracker is not the same( i'm english but live in NY) think digestives crumbled up......  thats closer

    ReplyDelete
  22. Wow. I think I may just make these right now, they look fantastic!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Do these need to be refrigerated once the choc. topping is set??  Or can they sit on counter for a few days, if they last that long??

    ReplyDelete
  24. I keep them in the refrigerator. They probably wouldn't go bad if you left them on the counter, but the peanut butter layer gets a little soft for my taste.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Why do you add butter in with the chocolate?  Can it be margarine?

    ReplyDelete
  26. It just makes the chocolate a little softer once it solidifies again. You could add margarine or even vegetable oil if you want.

    ReplyDelete
  27.  Thank you.  I didn't add the butter, but my chocolate didn't stick to the peanut butter.  Is it because I used dark chocolate instead of semi sweet?  They're still really good!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I used semi sweet & added the butter just like the recipe stated but my chocolate didn't stick to the on mixture either :( Still - amazingly delicious but I can't help but wonder what I could've done wrong.

      Delete
  28. My chocolate still was really hard and made it difficult to cut them. They just fractured apart:( they are delicious though! Any suggestions?

    ReplyDelete
  29. You could try adding more oil or butter to the chocolate and see if that helps you.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Do u use a mixer to.mix them or just by hand

    ReplyDelete
  31. Mmm I think I need to try these. But I wonder...just how steep is this rather steep caloric count? lol

    ReplyDelete
  32. Honestly, I've never wanted to calculate it. You can feel free it you want to, though. Just don't report back. :)

    ReplyDelete
  33. We also have had this recipe in our family for years except instead of graham crackers we used rice krispies. I am excited to try the new version!

    ReplyDelete
  34. When I used the printed option the recipe had the butter ommited.  :(

    ReplyDelete
  35. when me and my mom found this we went to work

    ReplyDelete
  36. Love how you made this into a reeces shap.  What do you do with the scraps?

    ReplyDelete
  37. Quick and easy recipe for breakfast!

    ReplyDelete
  38. My son loves these and they sound easy to make. Going to give it a try

    ReplyDelete
  39. I made these and they are seriously SO good. Thanks for the recipe.

    ReplyDelete
  40. mix some peanut butter with the chocolate instead or butter...works like a charm :)

    ReplyDelete
  41. Thanks, Angela! That's a great suggestion. I'll have to try it next time.

    ReplyDelete
  42. If I use a cupcake paper to make them look like Reese cups, will they stick or should I spray the paper? Making these for my mom for Mother's Day, can't wait!

    ReplyDelete
  43. I made these using Soy Nut Butter because of my peanut allergic child. OMG it is the closest thing I have had to peanut butter cups in forever. Thank you for posting this.

    1. Cara, you should try sunflower seed butter. It has a consistency more like peanut butter. Tastes better too in my opinion.

      Delete
  44. How many does it make?

    ReplyDelete
  45. Does anybody have a good conversion to grams? I keep finding different numbers and this recipe just sounds soooo good!

    ReplyDelete
  46. Just what I've been looking for! Many thanks. I'm headed to the store for the ingredients... with my mouth watering.

    ReplyDelete
  47.  Are these super crunchy or more moist? I have braces and I cannot have crunchy things, but this recipe looks lovely!

    ReplyDelete
  48. Oh, I remember the days of braces all too well. These are more moist than crunchy, so you should have no problem eating them.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I'm running to the store right now to buy the ingredients that I'm missing. I LOVE reeses but we don't get them down here where I live :(

  50. I just found this page but the best thing I ever had was peanut butter balls or buckeyes they are great just roll access scraps into balls about 1 inch round then dip in melted semi sweet chocolate chips with one teaspoon crisco shortening using a double boiler till smooth and melted a double boiler is easy to make using a large pot add water to it about half full then take a large glass bowl place on top bring water to boil add chips to glass bowl then add the Crisco heat till melted it will become shiny reduce heat once it is done to keep it melted roll each peanut butter ball in the chocolate place in fridge till chocolate is hardened it is delicious. To make actual peanut butter balls use one jar peanut butter crunchy or smooth your choice about 2 cups powdered sugar, softened butter about two tablespoons you can use the kind that comes in tubs so that it's already soft I did and it tasted great, one teaspoon vanilla extract combine all ingredients till mixed thoroughly then roll into 1 inch balls using a tooth pic pick up each ball and dip them in chocolate one at a time for buckeyes cover all but top of ball leaving a circle at the top or just completely cover them in chocolate then once they are all dipped and plated on waxed paper place in fridge it also helps to place the balls in fridge before dipping so that they harden up enough to poke with a tooth pic. Once they are set enjoy they are the best. Better than Reeses cups.

  51. My school district made these and I would always bat my eyes for seconds. When I found the recipe, I ate a whole 8x8 pan in less than 24 hours... I haven't made them since for fear of addiction.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Ummm... why was this labeled on Pinterest as sugar free?! These look wonderful but DEFINITELY not sugar-free.

    ReplyDelete
  53. No, definitely not sugar free. Sorry it was pinned incorrectly on Pinterest.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Would imagine you could make with Splenda or Stevia or Truvia.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Is 55 calories correct?

    ReplyDelete
  56. I'm not sure where you read that these were 55 calories, but I would imagine that would be an extremely tiny portion.

    ReplyDelete
  57. The same Pinterest pin that says it has no sugar

    ReplyDelete
  58. Oh dear. If I can find the pin I'll try to leave a comment on it. I love Pinterest, but sometimes it isn't completely accurate. Sorry for the confusion.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I was skeptical of the sugar free claim myself; but I will still be making these--these sound so delish! and they are hub's favorite treat. he'll really love me for making these! Thanks for the easy recipe!

    ReplyDelete
  60. Though not the source, this was the pin I could find with the highest repins.

  61. i found this too thru pinterest - looks delicious. i did note on the pin that these are not sugar free and definately not 55 cal each - at least not the portion size as shown so there hopefully no further confusion. did note as well that the recipe sounded amazing and looked delicious! i think these will be on my holiday table this year. thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  62. That's the trouble when people keep repinning pins instead of pinning from the original source! No matter the calorie or sugar count I will be making these, they sound amazing!

Found this via pintrest too, bummer they're not sugar free. Pesky little pinners : ) Although you could make them with sugar free or low sugar cookies, (or maybe rice chex would work) and use agave nectar instead of the powdered sugar. And then melt sugar free chocolates on top. Although even that would have a ton of calories. Although all of these substitutions seem like I'd wind up on pintrosity!

    ReplyDelete
  64. Originally pinned by Kelli Coon onto Sugar and Spice I saw no sugar and laughed. Powdered sugar IS sugar. ;) Looks yummy! Going to have to try these! :)

    ReplyDelete
  66. I have made these for many years and have given as gifts for Christmas. They are yummy and easy to make. However, I wouldn't mess with a good thing. They are a treat.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Love Love Loved these!

    ReplyDelete
  68. lol too bad the comments don't re-pin. I was very curios when I saw sugar free, and was all how to they make the PB not sticky,,, FAIL not sugar free after all.

    ReplyDelete
  69. these look awesome, thanks so much for sharing! i also came through pinterest... the original pin doesn't link directly back to your site, but when i repinned i changed the link.

    ReplyDelete
  70. did you cut them with cookie circle cutter? And then ate all the little scraps, lol?

    ReplyDelete
  71. you can always use the reduced sugar peanut butter and sugar free chocolate chips.

    ReplyDelete
  72. im going to put them in a cupcake tin to save me the trouble of cutting

    1. Warning you now, that will actually be more work for you. I've made my version of these a million times and all different ways and cupcake tins would take even longer. Try my version with milk choc and they will be super easy to cut!

      Delete
  74. I make a version of these that taste more like the real thing. I only do about 1/2 the recipe in a 9x9 pan and line the bottom with parchment. I also use milk choc chips, that's why they taste more like Reese's. I spread 1/2 of the choc on the parchment then chill for 10 min and then spread the PB filling and then the rest of the choc on that and chill once again for 10 min. Way easier to cut and taste waaaaaay better! Try em!

    ReplyDelete
  75. Yes, I thought this was sugar-free as well! Unfortunately, I can not have them now!

    ReplyDelete
  76. Confused thought it said no sugar??

    ReplyDelete
  77. The ingredients call for over 3 cups of powdered sugar. How is that sugar free?

    ReplyDelete
  78. Since when is powdered SUGAR NOT sugar?

    ReplyDelete
  79. It's too bad that people don't take the time to read the comments... :-) yes, the pin you saw may have said sugar free, but do you trust everything you read on the internet?! Whoever pinned must have just glanced through your recipe and didn't see just plain old sugar so that's what they put! Anyway, can't wait to try this recipe! I agree Sunbutter (from sunflower oil) is a good substitute! It sounds similar to the peanut butter balls we used to make except maybe less work since you don't have to roll them and then dip.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Does anyone know that nutritional information for this recipe?

    ReplyDelete
  81. SERIOUSLY. Some giant liar posted these are 100% sugar free and only 55 calories each... though they have 3+ cups of sugar in them BEFORE you use the graham crackers and chocolate?! Yeeks. Pinterest Fail. Yummy looking, but HUGE misleading Pinterest Fail.

    ReplyDelete
  82. I know. I really am sorry. I've tried to track down the original pin but since it's been repinned so many times it's impossible. I'm so sorry people are being mislead. :(

    ReplyDelete
  83. Yeah, I tried to find the original pinner, too. It's def NOT your fault. You simply posted a REALLY delicious looking recipe (frankly, one that all of us have wanted to crack for years!). Someone's just ridiculous and posted sugar-free and low cal, as, of course, everyone's either having to live a sugar-free life, or trying to lose weight. ;) Thank you for being awesome in spite of all of our crazy messages on your post. It's like Pinterest is almost punishing you... OR maybe just convincing us to wait to go sugar-free in another week. ;)

  84. I looked at the price of Reese's trees this Christmas and couldn't justify buying them even though I love them. Just made these and they ARE better!
Also, didn't realize there were so many people out there who trusted what others say about pins on Pinterest! Its not your fault :)

  87. I just saw this on Pinterest and was really excited!!

    ReplyDelete
  88. Hi there! Found this recipe via Pinterest! I immediately ran out and got the ingredients I was missing to make up a batch. DE.LIC.IOUS. These are 'shut-the-front-door' good. Only change I made was to make them in little mini-mini-cupcake type liners to make 'em bite-sized. Which also means I don't *actually* know how much of the batch I've eaten...ahem.
Would you mind if I shared this recipe (and pictures of the ones I made!) on my blog?
    Nicole www.thecoppercoop.wordpress.com

    ReplyDelete
  89. I'm so glad you liked them, Nicole! That's a great idea to make them in little mini cupcake liners. I'll have to give that a try next time I make them because it definitely would help with the portion control. :) Feel free to share the recipe on your blog.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Super excited to try them. I wasn't sure I'd try if they were sugar free. Hahaha! Everyone needs a treat now and then.

    ReplyDelete
  91. The pin stating that this is sugar free and 55 cals each is so prevalent that you should probably stick a disclaimer at the start of your post. I too came here from that false Pin (diabetic & with high hopes!) and read your recipe going WTF.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Nicole :) the pin I used came right to this site.

I always go to the source instead of just pinning if at all possible. This pin http://pinterest.com/erinaslam/food/ is where I got this recipe tonight.

I came and checked because I have a pb cup recipe I have used for years and it is wonderful but I couldn't see where it would be no sugar unless it is artificial sweetner or something equally yuck.

    ReplyDelete
  93. "NO SUGAR WHATSOEVER"... except there is powdered sugar, chocolate chips, and graham crackers.... plenty of sugar here.

    ReplyDelete
  94. For those interested in the actual numbers: These are about 400 calories for a 3 inch x 1 inch serving. Definitely not healthy, just delicious sounding.

    ReplyDelete
  95. Although I am a health nut (I saw "no sugar, 55 calories a serving" on Pinterest, realize that that is not the case, oh well!), my boyfriend is definitely not a health nut and I think I'll make these for him for Valentine's Day using heart-shaped cookie cutters! They sound delicious!

    ReplyDelete
  96. These are absolute delicious!!!! Im made them this morning, they totally taste like the real thing!

    ReplyDelete
  97. I am cracking up at these comments. Your recipe looks delicious and I'm sorry that people are upset because some random pinterest user lied to them.

    ReplyDelete
  104. Poor baby. You cant have something that was gonna make you fat anyways. GET OVER IT AND SHUT THE HELL UP. These comments are ridiculous. You people complaining about sugar sound like ridiculous spoiled children,

    ReplyDelete
  105. Making these after I run to the grocery store to get extra (OMG) SUGAR!! Cant wait to eat them!

    ReplyDelete
  106. How should these be stored? Do they have to be stored in the refrigerator or can they be stored in a sealed container at room temperature? Like, say, a Mason Jar? I want to give them as gifts. :) Thanks for the awesome recipe!

    ReplyDelete
  107. I find it best to store them in the fridge. They can be out for a little while but they tend to be firmer when they are chilled.

    ReplyDelete
  108. I LOVE LOVE LOVE peanut butter and these look amazing! Can't wait to try them!! Thank you SO MUCH for posting!

    ReplyDelete

  110. I'm sorry you have so little respect for your body that you don't mind eating processed GMO graham crackers and sugar which is ALSO now contaminated with GMOS. Sugar even BEFORE it was GMO is HIGHLY inflammatory and linked to EVERY disease known to man. Tumors LOVE sugar. Not so funny anymore?

    ReplyDelete
  111. Sugar feeds TUMORS and is GMO now Shelbie. You really should educate yourself in both manners and what is happening with our food supply as well as a nutrition class.

    ReplyDelete
  112. Sorry Guest, but I'm with Savory Simple on this. I can't control that this was pinned incorrectly. I also have to say, as someone with a Masters in plant genetics and who has worked on responsibly engineering plants to reduce pesticide use and invasiveness, that although I enjoy my GMOs in graham cracker form, I really prefer them in cake or cookie form.

    ReplyDelete
  113. How frustrating that it was pinned incorrectly. Hate that about Pinterest sometimes, especially when it leads to people being rude as if it was your fault! Anyways, these look phenomenal, and I'm definitely going to make them ASAP!

You do realize there is a link at the beginning of this post to the clean eating ones right? Also, don't be such a jerk. There is no need to be condescending. That is not needed here.

Thanks for posting BOTH of these recipes so there is a choice. They look amazing, can't wait to try them.

    ReplyDelete
  115. I'm sorry you're so utterly clueless about what "GMO" means that you just regurgitate words you saw on Fox News....

    ReplyDelete
  116. I am deathly allergic to peanuts and my husband gave all nuts up when we first started dating. The one thing he always talks about is resses pieces cups, so I am going to try making these with "wow butter". Its a soy butter that apparently tastes just like peanut butter. I will let you know how it turns out!

    ReplyDelete
  117. What a great idea! Please do let me know if it works. That is so sweet of you to make for your husband, and so sweet of him to give up nuts for you.

    ReplyDelete
  118. He loved it! He says it tastes just like the real thing. Peanut free resse's pieces, go figure.

    ReplyDelete
  119. That is awesome! I never would have thought. What a smart idea on your part.

    ReplyDelete
  120. quick question: can you use chunky peanut butter as well? that's what we happen to have. :)

    ReplyDelete
  121. I think that would work. You will have crunchy reese cups instead of smooth ones, just to warn you. :)

    ReplyDelete
  122. i'm pretty sure that won't get any objections! thanks for the recipe!
